SOME POINTS ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION - SHOULD BE READY TODAY, FEB 17-th

Everything you need to know about Sailors Without Borders.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

WHAT DO YOU MEAN RESCUE MIGRANTS AT SEA ?

It’s a big difference between helping others in need and engaging other vessels, even these fully loaded with refugees.

Our intention is to rescue people in direct and obvious danger. That’s captains duty.

The International Convention On Salvage, IMO 1989, says in article no. 10.1 :

Every master is bound, so far as he can do so without serious danger to his vessel and persons thereon, to render assistance to any person in danger of being lost at sea.

HOW CAN YOU HELP THEM ?

We rent yachts and sail them day and night. When we see any man overboard or on board but asking for help, we:

  • call Coast Guard and/or local ships in area. Say what we see and what can we do,
  • rescue people in danger,
  • again call Coast Guard and/or local ships to report accident and say what’s our intention,
  • drop rescuer to the nearest port or local authorities vessel,
  • fill up official documents,
  • come back sailing

WHY YOU DO THAT INSTEAD OF POLICE, COAST GUARD OR FRONTEX?

There are not enough vessels. If I’m wrong. why people drown?

Take a look at map. Greece and Italy have a long costs and they can not send their ships to one are only. Beside that, Greece is in deep crisis.

WHO FINANCE YOUR MISSION?

That’s our weak point. We had no time to prepare financing for this project slowly, step by step. We finance it from our private pockets. It means we have some money for immediate start but not enough to continue mission for months. Looking for partner / sponsor / donor.

Meantime preparing first crowdfunding campaign. Any idea?

IS IT DANGEROUS ?

Sailing is always dangerous but good captain know how to minimise potential risks.

It seems to be more dangerous at land. Few weeks ago some volunteers from Spain and Denmark. View a storry in links below:

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO OPERATE ?

First we go to Greek islands. We’ll check area rom Kos to Lesvos. Most of migrants crossing sea at this part of Greece. Distance is not so big but it doesn’t mean it’s safe to travel by overloaded dinghy when ferry stay at ports because waves are too high.

Next we should go and patrol Mediterranean Sea between Lampedusa and Crete. It’s a very large area and most dangerous for migrants. Distances are much longer then between some Greek Islands and Turkey.

CAN I OPEN LOCAL DIVISION IN MY COUNTRY / CITY ?

Yes, you can. We are very open and target focused. It means we really want to help. If you understand and agree with this simple idea, we are welcome. You can set up local division or just join us. You can go with us sailing or support us from home.

Fell free to contact us.

I HAVE DIFFERENT IDEA HOW IT SHOULD BE ORGANIZED. ARE YOU INTERESTED ?

Yes, very interested.

As I wrote one point before, we are very open and simply men. We didn’t born with knowledge how to run and administrate charity. It’s quite likely you know better how it should works.

If you know how to help better, let me kno, please

CAPTAINS QUESTIONS

WHO SHOULD I RESCUE ?

Just do everything according to the law. No more needed. The Law says to help men in distress when you are able to do that. See adequate article below:

The International Convention On Salvage, IMO 1989, Article 10.1 says:

Every master is bound, so far as he can do so without serious danger to his vessel and persons thereon, to render assistance to any person in danger of being lost at sea.

CAN I GET MONEY FOR MY WORK AND TRAVEL ?

Not this time, because we are using our private money. We have no financial grants. Yet!

In the future, I hope to get some money from Partners or public actions. We need experts and professionals. They, like you Captain, should get at least money for travel and accommodation.

HAVE YOU ANY BOAT FOR ME ?

It depended on sailing area and time. Ask by mail please.

There are two boat’s sources:

  • Chartered yachts – we just rent them from local charter companies using or two charter agents :
    1. Azymut Czarter
    2. Sailogy SA
  • Yachts belong to private owners

CAN MY YACHT BE KIDNAPPED ?

Kidnapping risk is higher then in Azores, for example. I don’t think any smugglers want to attack you. For what? That’s not their business.

I don’t know any facts about piracy attacks in this area, however you always be the first one.

if you know more, just let me know. I have to publish all important information for other captains.

HOW MANY HOURS A DAY SHOULD I PATROL A SEA ?

As long as you can and as it’s safe for you, your crew and boat.

You are there to safe lives at sea. You can not be effective sleeping at marina. However it’s always a captains decision. Just check weather communicates, crew and boat condition and make right decision. We’ll fully respect it.

CREW QUESTIONS

CAN I WORK AS A CREW?

Yes, you can join as and work as a crew.

Unfortunately you can not get any money for your volunteers work, sorry.

We are still using our private money. We have no financial grants. Yet!

WHAT'S THE WEATHER CONDITION ?

It’s a winter time, now. It’s not perfect weather for sailing and for sure for crossing Mediterranean by dinghies.

Usually it’s cold and raining. Sometimes waves are too big even for ferries.

You can easy check actual weather on:

British MetOffice

UNHCR forecasts in actual Winter Operations Cell Daily Report

It’s a forecast from February 19-th:

  • A weather system moves across the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and then across the Aegean on Saturday and Sunday bringing some heavy showers and thunderstorms to the area. Around this weather system there will be areas of strong winds on Saturday and Sunday. It will also feel very cold for those exposed to these conditions.
  • Due to the strong winds, some moderate or large waves will form in the Aegean between the Greek Islands and Turkey on Saturday night and Sunday morning. The waves can make travel by small boats difficult. In the past, a reduction in numbers of arrivals to the islands was observed with the presence of rough seas.
  • Temperatures will return close to average for the time of year so it will feel far colder than it was earlier this week.
